The article discusses them both being nominated for the Oscar award and the roles available in Hollywood for Black actresses.
Viola says her resume is only now catching up to the average Black person.
“Black directors really don’t offer me movies. Most of the work I do is really in predominantly White films. That’s just how it works.”
She says after playing her role in Tyler Perry’s movie Madea Goes To Jail, Madea fans now ask for her autograph. “Suddenly, I have street cred.”
Viola grew up poor and lived in condemned apartments as a child. She borrowed money to attend Julliard.
Taraji says she is a very frugal person and she watching how she spends her money. She says she still lives in her 1,500 square-foot, two-bedroom home with her son. She says while it is almost time for an upgrade, she will not be buying a multi-million mansion.
She says paparazzis are now following her so she makes sure she looks fierce at all times.
She tells a funny story of arriving at the airport and the paps were waiting.
“My publicist and I get to the airport, and there’s like four guys with cameras hanging and I’m like, ‘Oh somebody must be comining, like P. Diddy.’ And I get out the care and it’s me they’re waiting for. They’re following me. I have to be aware of how I look when I go to the airport or to the store. The days of wearing sweats, mismatched, hmm. Can’t do that anymore.”
