Pride Magazine Nia LongNia Long is featured on the cover of the U.K. magazine, Pride. She talks about singers crossing over into acting and not really having the skills to do so.

She is asked about Beyonce so of course now everyone is going to say she’s dissing Beyonce when I think she’s speaking about the situation as a whole. Here’s some quotes from the interview.

“If you’re a singer not an actress, you should sing. If you’re a rapper, you should rap.”

Asked what she thought about Beyonce’ performance in Obsessed:

“I didn’t see ‘Obsessed,’ so I can’t comment, but it’s just not about how talented you are anymore. It’s about, ‘How much box-office revenue will this person generate?’ When you see certain people – we won’t name names – they just don’t have the skill, and no one in their team has said, ‘You need acting classes.’”

She says there are some exceptions in Hollywood:

“If you take time to develop your craft, God bless you. Jamie Foxx is an example of both [actor and singer].”

On the quality of roles Hollywood offers Black actresses:

“If you were able to take all the Black actresses and the choices we’ve made collectively, it’s a pure reflection of what you see on film. People need to work. But the content? The opportunities for Black actresses are more widespread today, but the quality has suffered,” she offered.

Nia is so right, it’s not about who can act anymore just about popularity and the box office…It’s a shame but that the world we live in…..I think Nia is a great actress …You Go Girl

  2. Brandi says:

Finally someone said it. I’ve been saying for awhile!

  3. felicia says:

    about time someone spoke up.

  4. CHERYL says:

IF RAPPER SHOULD RAP, I DIDN’T SEE HER TURNING DOWN ROLES FROM ICE CUBE, HE IS A RAPPER, WHO THREW WORK HER WAY. NIA SHOULD PICK HER WORD ALITTLE MORE CAREFULLY. I AM SORRY NIA IS NO A LIST ACTRESS GETTING SHUT OUT. HOW MAN ACADEMY AWARDS OR ANY AWARD FOR THAT MATTER DOE SHE HOLD?

  5. Atia says:

Ditto Brandy! My thoughts as well.

  6. Suave says:

Nia long is amazing! She stated the truth Im glad sumbody did! And nia is a great actress! Brandy is one of those few exceptions!

  7. SquareBizz2020 says:

Just because some one enters the industry as one thing i.e a singer and ventures into other things doesnt mean there doing anything wrong. i am more than certain that if ms nia had anything else to offer the world she would bring it. love nia, but dont knock somebody for trying there hand in new things…if this was coming from somebody reputable i might consider the validity but it just sounds like someones upset cuz they aint getting no work! i mean lets face it shes low budget, only famous for hood movies, and now shes doing voice overs for cartoon…hmm maybe she should stay in her lane!

  8. Yolanda says:

Nia is very under rated , and I hate that her career has not blown up the way it should have. She is speaking the truth though. It’s all about dollars and cents now. Beyonce will sell tickets. Unfortunately the Nia’s , Angela B.’s, and Sanaa’s do not.

  9. Shae J says:

why everyone hating as if she said that if you rap that’s all you can do… she did bring up the point that there are some that are mult-talented, but too many of you stopped reading at the first sentence…

We all know her comments were directed at Beyonce and if you really want to be truthful, we all know BEYONCE CAN’T ACT. So why ya’ll want to BASH her as if she hasn’t been an influential woman of color actress. She has and she has held her own in that world. Beyonce hasn’t and she’s bringing the QUALITY of what it takes to be an actress down. Ell I’m as good as B on the big screen and like her, I haven’t had a class in my life…

She just said what a lot of others were thinking. Don’t BASH her for being the first to say it publicly… I seen Obsessed and it’s sad that every movie she has the starring role in the co-star always OUTSHINES her. The white girl BROUGHT it, B just got the role b/c her father and her produced it. Her name brought people to the box office not her TALENT in the acting realm!

    @ shae j

    Co-sign…amen

  11. kay says:

i agree with Nia, and im so happy that someone has finally spoke up about this. Beyonce is getting PLAYED OUT.
Ice cube is both a great actor and rapper. He is very talented, i wish i could say the same fa ya girl B. she’s wack one minute she wanna make clothes, music, movies, shoes…blah blah just sit ur ass down and have some babies

  12. Iesha says:

And Im just gonna speak the real truth, this includes Jennifer Hudson, granted she was great in the MUSICAL, but that doesnt always translate into pure acting roles. Everything is about the HYPE never about the RAW TALENT!

  13. TamBam says:

I agree with you SquareBizz2020 But once you venture into new things you should be just as good at that as the thing that made you famous. If you a bomb singer/entertainer on stage and as an actress you’re second rate at best than maybe someone should have enough courage to tell you “You need more lessons” instead of just choosing to hear that your great at everything. And FYI, Nia has ventured into new territory, she has produced movies and video, and directed short films…she knows how to stay in her lane.

  14. twinmom says:

Everybody say Amen, I am glad one of many talanted ladies that are not getting more movies roles had the guts to say how she really feels.

  15. ADDICTOF1 says:

I agree with Nia Long, BEYONCE is not a good actress and she only getting roles because of the box office. I think that girl needs to sit down because Beyonce is trying to get all the money she can. She is a selfish azz person. Stop trying to take all the shine Beyonce.

  16. Eboni says:

Nia is so damn right! All yall other people trying to take up for Beyonce…………………………she needs to stick with her singing, im not trying to hate on B because she is doing her thing right now but she needs to stick with her singing. Honestly I think we put her up so high that we think she can do it all but in actuality she is not that good of an actor. Now this is on a serious note. I commend Nia for being so bold to say what needed to be said.

  17. ykesha2001 says:

Miss Nia Long did not state the truth, what she did was just put more focus on her not going so good career. Boo boo, this is not the way to get people to call you for auditions, I’m just saying. Beyonce may not be the greatest actress, but I tell you what, when she wants something, she works hard for it. Can we say the same about Nia Long? Don’t hate on the next person because your money ain’t flowing right. You want a part, try out for it, you don’t like the parts you are getting, either fire your Manager or tell him/her to step their game up. Ashanti wanted to do theatre and thats what she is doing, Miss Nia Long not gone say nothing about that? Ciara did stage plays, Miss Nia Long not gone say nothing about that? You get the pretty lady next door roles because thats what you try out for. Maybe you should call Tyler Perry or are you too good for him too Nia Long?

  18. adie says:

Cheryl and others…I think you’re missing what Nia is saying. She’s not saying that singers/rappers/athletes/etc. shouldn’t act. She’s saying that if you’re going to act, then perfect your craft otherwise stick to what you’re known for doing. While I do like to see Beyonce perform (singing), she’s not a great actress, although she has gotten better with her acting. I haven’t seen “Obsessed”, but I did see “Cadillac Records”. She did a much better job in that movie than “Dreamgirls”. As for the Ice Cube comment…he does well in the roles he’s chosen for himself. Do I want to see Shaq in another movie…no…but that’s just me. :-)

  19. Truthful says:

Nia is on point. Beyonce is a great singer – sing damnit, just sing and dance!

  20. Sabine says:

Some of the people on this blog are sooo out of order and need to take their heads out of Beyonce’s A**. First of Nia was speaking generally and if anyone thinks that Nia was talking about Beyonce then that’s really on you and she does have a right to voice her opinion…

  21. Tina says:

This is to all of the people that obvious can’t comprehend, Nia’s career as an actress has been great. Nia has been doing movies, soaps, etc for an extremely long time, her point was valid, she didn’t say anything wrong and she didn’t point the finger, however you all assumed that she was belittling Beyonce. Nia stated that she never saw the movie, however I did and the co-star shined in the movie Beyonce is not a great or good actress, she’s a hell of a performer and a singer but an actress she’s not, and for (ykesha2001), if obsessed had addition for the leading role and John Singleton was the producer Beyonce wouldn’t have even made the list of actors or singers for that particular role. Being that her father produced the movie she practical owned the movie as well as Cadillac Records that’s why she got the part not because of her skills sweet heart. Ashanti is not a good singer hopefully she will be better on broadway; and a stage play is totally different from acting because being a singer a stage play or broadway is in a singers lane education is key utilize it. As Yolonda stated Nia’s talent is very under rated as well as the actress that can get a role and own it such as Angela Bassett, Sanaa Lathan, Gabriel Union, Queen Latifah, Halle Berry, Thandie Newton whom all of these women are the top ten black female actresses.
