Russell Simmons and Bill Cosby reportedly had beef when Russell hit out against Bill’s “State Of Emergency Project” in 2009. Russell decided he wanted to apologize at the Jackie Robinson Annual Awards Dinner last weekend. This is what went down, according to Russell:
When I look back, I feel remorse for judging him. And it has been a source of a “rap beef” for years. He has been critical of the poets but I have maintained that the entertainment, especially most of the poets, are simple reflections of cultures of truth. Anyhow, I wanted to find him to apologize, to tell him I was sorry about my statements and to tell him that I loved him. Suddenly I turned and he was behind the curtain and I said “I love you” and he responded on some real hip-hop, “Get the f*ck out my face!”
Anyhow, I love Bill. His next move was straight up old school pre b-boy hood shit. He walked by me and bumped me with his shoulder as I walked off stage after presenting my award to Sean, just like the cool character in “Let’s Do It Again.” I then loved him even more. He’s from the same hood I’m from, just got a lucky break like me, cause I am those suffering men. And after that elbow I knew he was too. – Source
The way Russell tells it, he just pounced on Bill and blurted out “I love you.” Not sure I would have responded the way Bill did but I think I’d be put off if someone who has been critical of me just popped up like that in my face.
When asked by the New York Post for comment about the incident, Bill said: “I don’t want to discuss it.”
