Yep you read that right. Laker forward Ron Artest filed papers today to have his name legally changed to Metta World Peace.
“It’s true, he did,” Heidi Buech, who was Artest’s publicist until resigning earlier this week, told the L.A. Times.
His lawyer said she had no information as to why he wanted his name changed.
The Lakers have been notified of his plans but he has not yet filed paperwork with the NBA to apply for a name change on the back of his jersey, Lakers spokesman John Black said. “My understanding is ‘Metta’ will be his first name and ‘World Peace’ will be his last,” Black said.
A hearing for the name change has been set for August 26th.
