Will Smith dropped by BBC Radio 1Xtra for a sit down with A.Dot and he joked he and wife Jada Pinkett “might have gone too far” with their hands-off parenting style. The actor also talked about the Oscar controversy which Aunt Vivian from Fresh Prince Of Bel Air he preferred and if there will be a Bad Boys 3.
On which Aunt Viv was better: “I think that both of the Aunt Vivs were really, really fantastic…I think Janet Hubert Whitten brought a really powerful dignity to the show. I think she’s brilliant. I think as an artist, there’s so many things that she does. She sings, she dances, she’s like a really powerful artist. I loved what she brought to the Fresh Prince.”
When asked about giving his kids “a lot of freedom of expression,” he laughed and said, “Yeah, I think it may have been a mistake. I think we may have gone too far.”
“How do you respond then, for example, if you encourage them to have freedom of expression and then people will start making jokes about say, Jaden modeling women’s clothes. How do you, as a dad, handle that?”
Will responded: “There’s a really powerful internal quality as an artist that as parents we encourage. You gotta get out on the edge, you have to try things, you have to be comfortable doing things that people don’t agree with, and you have to be comfortable doing things that you could fail..Jaden is 100 percent fearless, he will do anything. So as a parent it’s scary, it’s really terrifying – but he is completely willing to live and die by his own artistic decisions and he just doesn’t concern himself with what people think.”
