Kanye West has been seen a lot with Amber Rose lately. Word is they are a new couple. So who is Amber Rose? She is a model and video vixen. People want to know her ethnicity among other things. Get that information and more from her recent interview with Smooth magazine below.
Give us a little background on yourself. I was born and raised in South Philadelphia. I’m 25 years old. I’m the most feminine tough girl you will ever meet. [laughs]
What makes you tough?
I’m very real and very blunt. I’ve been through a lot, so I have pretty tough skin. But at the same time, I’m feminine in every way. I love clothes and makeup and getting dolled up just like any other female.
What’s your ethnicity?
I’m half Italian and half Cape Verdean. It’s definitely an interesting combination. People are never really able to guess what I am most of the time.
It takes a confident woman to shave off her hair.
Yeah. I am pretty confident in my beauty, and I don’t see a need to hide behind hair. Besides, I can get ready to go out a lot faster now that I don’t have to spend a half-hour doing my hair.
You also have to be confident to survive in South Philly. What was it like growing up there?
It was a tough neighborhood. I went to an all-Black school where I was the only “White girl.” I had to fight a lot because I didn’t look like everyone else. A lot of girls used to pick on me and pull my hair. The kids would tease me by saying I was adopted because my mom was so dark and I look White. People would find every reason to antagonize me.

She is not half portugues, learn some history and respect for other cultures. When asked what is my race I answer Black but when asked what is my ethnicity I answer Cape Verdean and anyone with enough sense should be able to differentiate the two.

not all cape verdians are mixed you assh*le. a few cape verdians are white and significant number are unmixed blacks, while majority of cabo verdeans are of mixed racial heritage, not all are so never make a general statement like that again. the average cape verdian by dna is closer to 65+% african and the rest portuguese which is why cape verdians are often confused with light skinned blacks or hispanicz. Also I acknowledge I have other ancestry but I’m not proud of it. I am Cape Verdean, that’s my ethnicity, I consider my race Africa American, why because Cape Verde is on the west coast of Africa and I was born in America, can’t get anymore African American than that! Yes Cape Verdeans come in a variety of hues….very fair to very dark and like most islanders we’re mixed with all types of ethnicities. Cape Verde was colonized by the Portuguese, like many places in Africa and South America, that does not mean that all Cape Verdeans are Portuguese and African. CV was a stop for trade ships, Africans were brought there and different Europeans and Asian peoples would go to pick up slaves there, hence we can be mixed with anything and everything. Yes the official language is Portuguese but its mixed with African dialects…Creole. Nough’ said!

I am also a Cape Verdean male who identifies myself as African American due to the fact that any other race that I may be mixed with is so far down the line that it will be difficult to trace. My skin is also light brown and like many other Cape Verdeans, I come from a family that ranges in colors from very fair in skin to very dark in skin. As my father once said, “I’d be ignorant to think my light skin and light eyes didn’t come from something other than the African in me” but at the same time being black is all we know and identify with.
I hate it when Cape Verdeans deny the fact that they are black. It’s simply self hatred and as my mom’s best friend once said, “Why praise your oppressor?”. Similar to Dominicans who say they are Spanish, I ask certain Cape Verdeans if they believe that Portugal is claiming them! (white & white does not make brown) In this day in age, most people are mixed with something else and very few people are 100% of anything.

First of all there truly is not such thing as ‘mixed’ race. Black is the dominant gene for race, so anyone mating with a black person IS BLACK. That is just pure science. I really don’t understand why Amber Rose gets such a hard time. She is no different from Megan Good or Melissa Ford. The only difference is she is managing to stay relevant. I hate to judge so I just try to look at things from a objective point of view and just say she is a fashionista. As a Nigerian, and an American, let me weigh in. This is precisly the tragedy of colonization. The reason there are so many differing opinions on Cape Verde (as with other places) is that people ARE different. A white person in Cape Verde will want to stake his/her claim and so tell you that Cape Verdeans aren’t black. A black person will want to stake his claim and tell you they are black. The multiracial Cape Verdeans might go either way. Either way, there is confusion, none of which was caused by the poor black folks dragged down there.
Anyhoo, Cape Verdea is geographically considered an African country. This has nothing to do with race (i.e. Libya is African as well). Racially, it is what it is – a country of differing races, but majority African descent. Biologically, it is the same thing as U.S. blacks and a lot of other places, but perhaps a greater degree of admixture with whites. People fail to understand the notion of “blacks” was an umbrella concept that tied in even people with significant white ancestry. So a “light skinned black” is most likely a person who has white mixture just like with Cape verdeans, and many places in the Americas. This is also the case in countries like Angola and South Africa that are squarely inside Africa.
A last note is that not all light complexion, light eyes reflect admixture. In fact, many igbos in Nigeria are very light hued, light eyed but ARE NOT of any admixture. Take Oguchi Onyewu, American-born Nigerian soccer player (http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2006/04/10/AR2006041001478.html) or Osi Umenyiora. So if you are light but outside of Africa, you can still be comfortable claiming Africa blood cause you never know.
