President Obama Presents Stevie Wonder Gershwin Award
President and Mrs. Obama presented Stevie Wonder with a Gershwin Award for lifetime achievement last night.
President Obama said:
“I think it’s fair to say that had I not been a Stevie Wonder fan, Michelle might not have dated me. We might not have married. The fact that we agreed on Stevie was part of the essence of our courtship.”
Michelle told the crowd that Stevie’s love song, You and I, had been the couple’s wedding song and that the first album she bought was Stevie’s Talking Book album. (For those keeping track, Michelle’s dress was designed by Stevie Wonder’s wife, designer Kai Milla.)
Stevie accepted the award from President Obama and gave him a hug. He said:
“President and Mrs. Obama, I’m so excited to know that I was a part of. … I needn’t say more,” Wonder said, drawing laughter and applause. “I want to first of all thank God for this moment, because only through him could all this happen.”
Stevie’s performance will be broadcast Thursday on PBS stations as part of a White House series on the arts.
