Spike Lee won his first Oscar Sunday during the 91st Academy Award for best screenplay adaptation for BlacKkKlansman.
The long overdue win was presented to him by his good friend Samuel L. Jackson. After Sam told him that his beloved NY Knicks broke their loosing strike he had the pleasure of reading his friend’s name. Spike walked to the stage where he promptly jumped into Sam’s arms, wrapping his legs around him.

Sam is 70 years old so glad they were able to pull that off.
Spike Lee was given a honorary Oscar award over the weekend. The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences had the annual Governors Award and honored the director for his body of work. His family was of course there as were Denzel Washington, Samuel L. Jackson and Wesley Snipes. Read more
Spike Lee is not here for Quenton Tarantino’s slavery movie, Django Unchained. The movie stars Jamie Foxx, Kerry Washington, Samuel L. Jackson and Leonardo DiCaprio. When asked by Vibe about the movie, Spike says he can’t speak on it because he’s not going to see it as it would be disrpectful to his ancestors.
“I can’t speak on it, cause I’m not going to see it. I’m not seeing it. I’m only going to say, it would be disrespectful to my ancestors to see that film. That’s the only thing I’m going to say. I can’t disrespect my ancestors. I can’t do it. I can’t do it. Now, that’s me I’m not speaking on behalf of anybody but myself. I can’t do it.”
He also added on Twitter: “American Slavery Was Not A Sergio Leone Spaghetti Western.It Was A Holocaust.My Ancestors Are Slaves.Stolen From Africa.I Will Honor Them.”
You better not ask Tyler Perry about Spike Lee anymore unless you want to set him off. At a recent press conference Tyler went off about Spike’s criticism of his movies: “I’m so sick of hearing about damn Spike Lee. Spike can go straight to hell!”
“I am sick of him talking about me. I am sick of him saying, ‘This is a coon, this is a buffoon.’ I am sick of him talking about Black people going to see movies. This is what he said: ‘You vote by what you see’ — as if black people don’t know what they want to see.”
